Will Ever the Wanderer Come? (2019) 3.5’

This piece captures the slow-moving, dreamy mood of Walter de la Mare’s poem “Will Ever?,” which uses a string of evocative questions and images: the wandering, flaming sun and the white, still moon; the shepherd and his “crook of simple gold” leading the stars into the fold; the Wanderer from far over the sea, sailing his ship up the river, and over the stones of the small brook to take the questioner on board for a mystical journey to the isles of the West. The saxophone provides texture and high-register embellishment to enhance the emotion and imagery of the text. This is the middle piece of a set of three. #1 is “The Horseman.” #3 is “Nobody Knows What the Wind Is.”

SATB and alto saxophone
