This Suite was written for oboist Michael Adduci. The first movement, “At Play,” pictures children in a playground. “At Rest” features the mild dissonance of overlapping, falling 3rds and has a relaxed, “impressionistic” vibe to it. The 3rd movement, “Intermezzo,” assumes a sarcastic, mocking tone that, to me, is one aspect of the oboe’s “personality.” The main theme of the “Rondo” features wide, playful skips, agile figurations, and a lively sense of humor. A brief slow section provides some contrast before the “cadenza” and the whirlwind finale.
