Prelude and Fugue (2018) 5.5’

Written for a very long-time, flute-playing friend. The Prelude begins with an introductory fanfare of sorts that becomes the main motif of the piece. The main section is pastoral in nature and features quartal themes that are passed from one instrument to another. The main theme of the Fugue features a distinctive repeated note and uses a lot of ascending and descending 4ths. The Fugue employs the usual techniques associated with the form: stretto (statements of the fugal theme spaced closer together), inversion (playing the theme “upside down”), and augmentation (playing the theme with longer note values).

Woodwind trio

For flute, clarinet and bassoon. Interesting lines and harmonies.
