Perchance to Dream (2020) 5’
“Perchance to Dream,” for four double basses, was inspired by my acquaintance with Zachary Hobin, a music educator and a very fine string bass player. The title refers to the famous quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1: “To die, to sleep – to sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…” In keeping with this brooding passage, the first and last sections of the piece are appropriately slow and dreamy, with a livelier middle section. The piece would work well with student musicians. Each bassist has a chance to play the melody.
Double bass quartet
Dreamy and brooding.
