Action! Gunshots! Pursuit and escape, dark shadows, suspense, a stolen kiss… This is the scenario for “Old Movie,” commissioned by the Celli ensemble at U.C. Berkeley. The piece begins with suspenseful action scenes that perhaps take place at night among the tall, shadowy buildings of a teeming metropolis. Following a dramatic climax (the cops arriving to arrest the bad guys?), the music becomes lyrical and impassioned. Maybe the sun is rising over the skyscrapers, or the flawed detective hero gets the girl, or… Listeners can invent their own version in the cinema of the imagination.
