My piano trio Late Journey has a narrative twist, as indicated by the titles of the movements: Hesitation, Visions, and Assurance. Listeners can work out the details of the narrative on their own, if they wish, or they can simply listen to Late Journey “as music.” The first movement does indeed sound hesitant and undecided, with unexpected starts and stops. Hesitation transitions without a pause into the mysterious, dream-like Visions, which begins and ends on a sustained low note in the cello. The first two movements foreshadow the main theme of Assurance, which bursts forth with great energy and propulsion.
