This Pentecost anthem is based on a dramatic and visionary text from Joel chapter 2 that describes how “in the last days” God will pour out the Holy Spirit on common people – no longer restricted to priests and prophets. Fantastic! How very understandable that the apostle Peter immediately thought of this scripture when he addressed the assembled crowd in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, as described in Acts chapter 2. In my setting, the text from Joel is followed by an impassioned plea for the Holy Spirit to fill us and inspire us anew in this time and place.
