I Bind Unto Myself Today (2014, 1982) 3.5’
This song is based on the Irish-inflected hymn “St. Patrick’s Breastplate,” which was probably written a couple of centuries after the lifetime of the famous saint for whom it is named. This strongly Trinitarian lyric is very appropriate for a baptism, which is why it’s dedicated to my three children and was premiered at the baptism of the youngest of them. My musical setting suggests a rhythmical Celtic style and sensibility. The last verse is meant to picture the surging of the sea.
Solo for medium high voice and piano
