Hesperides (1983, 2015) 15.5’
This song cycle uses six vivid, sensual poems by the 17th century English poet Robert Herrick, one of the finest lyric poet of his day. These poems speak of idyllic pastoral life, of love, and of beautiful flowers. Also, of the pain of thwarted love and of the power of music to soothe anguish and suffering. Included in the song cycle is Herrick’s well-known romp “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.” (The final song, “To Music, to Becalm His Fever,” is available separately.)
