Commissioned by my harpsichordist friend Barbara, who really likes the Baroque-era classics buy wanted some new music for the instrument in a 21^st century idiom. The five movements form a general narrative arc with widely varied moods. “Waiting” is wistful and halting; “Arrival” is upbeat and excited; “Repose” is slow and lyrical; “Pursuit and Escape” is fraught and melodramatic; “Rescue and Redemption” is celebratory, with a nod to the elegance of Rameau and other French Baroque composers.
