Dave Baldwin’s lyric is a vivid reflection on the parable of the absent Master who has left his house under the management of his servants and who will return at an unexpected hour. A warning to them to watch the way they live and to always be on guard: “You must be ready! Don’t let him catch you by surprise!” My musical setting reflects the urgent tone of the parable by using the rhythmic, driving style of a traditional spiritual.
